THE HIGH COMMISSIONER.

CABLE FROM SIR J. G. WARD. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 20. A cablegram from the Prime Minister has been received by Sir James Carroll, which makes the position clear regarding the re-appointment of Sir William Hall-Jones as High Commissioner. It reads:—“You can give an absolute contradiction to tho rumour regarding my taking the position of High Commissioner; also the suggestion regarding Sir Robert Stout and Sir J. Findlay. There is no such intention. The position is that the High Commissioner has the appointment extended to tho end of August and has not tendered his resignation to me. The whole matter is standing over for consideration by Cabinet until my return.”
