ARRIVAL OF THE TONCARIRO.
o (•uorpnoossv gp ,m, fl Wellington, July 5. The Tongariro brought 259 passengers, of whom 228 were third-class. 'There were 45 assisted immigrants—--32 adults and 13 children—-and nine wives joining husbands. Eighteen domestics wore included in the list. A mishap occurred to one of the boilers of the Tongariro dm ing the passage, from London at 10.30 p.m. when about nine days from Hobart. The top of the- combustion chamber of ono of the five boilers gave nay owing to a weak plate. The accident was accompanied by a slight report and a volume of steam issued from .the stokehold grating. The electric light was cut off and some uneasiness was expressed among passengers. After a stop of two hours the vessel resumed under four boilers. The Tongariro, although one boiler was out of use, averaged 275 miles a day and was not appreciably delayed. While at Hobart a drunken seaman harangued the third-class passengers, making startling statements which tended” to alarm the passengers. He was locked up and next day lie apologised.
