The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 1911. THE CORONATION.
Tiie prelate who crowned Kin;;; George and Queen A!ary—the Most Rev. Randall Thomas Davidson, Archbishop of Canterbury—is said to be a very dilierent typo of man from rough old A rchbishop ■ Temple, who, when rendered iniirm through years, was called upon to crown King Edward. Dr Temple was a great man, but he was no courtier; while Archbishop Davidson lias had much to do with Royalty for many years. An admirer writes that tiie Primate has “the gracious manner, the winning urbanity, which charm for the moment to the forgetfulness of everything else,” and that tie gives the impression of being a courtier with a predilection for the society of intellectual people. .Behind that, however, is the man of energy, the man of lolly ideals, the “Imperialist of God.” Archbishop Temple was 80 when he crowned King Edward; Archbishop Davidsbn is (13. There wore no such incidents on Thursday as occurred at, the Coronation of King Edward through the feebleness of the Primate and the Dean, or such -muddling as occurred at the Coronation of Queen Victoria. At the ceremony in 1837 the different “actors” were, according to Grovillo, very imperfect in their parts, and only two had rehearsed them. There was continual embarrassment, and the Queen never knew what she was to do next. “Pray toll me what. 1 am to do, for they don’t know,” site said to (and Thynnc at one stage, and when the orb was put into her band: “What am i to do with ill” Her Majesty and the Archbishop had a discussion as to which linger Lho ring was to go on. In these times there are careful rehearsals of all such elaborate ceremonial.
