A STOREKEEPER HORSEWHIPPED.
o BY DOCTOR’S WIFE. Recently a lady who resides in Warkworth (Auckland) horsewhipped a storekeeper resident in that township. Her husband (Dr J. How ins) now writes to the Auckland “Herald” as follows: “On the evening of Juno Ist 1 was informed that certain statements had been made by a local storekeeper about my wife. I went homo, and tolling her what I had heard, asiced her what she wished me to do. She asked mo (as I expected) to allow her to horsewhip him. f agreed, and in the morning we want together to tho store of Mr Geo. Guest and bought a suitable whip, and then told him what w'c intondc d doing with it. Ho strongly dissuaded us from our project, and at last said: ‘Well, (lector, will yon come with mo while your wife waits here, and we will ask the man if lie really said those tilings?’ I agreed, and further promised Mr Guest that I would not myself lay violent .hands on the man in his presence. We proceeded to the shop, and Mr Guest asked I im plainly, ‘Did you say so-and-so (repeating the supposed statements) about Mrs Hewins?’ The answer was ‘Yes, I did.’ Wo wont hack to Mr Guest’s shop, and then calling several witnesses to follow us, my wife and I wont to the shop, and she administered the pi odetormined punishment. I then addressed the crowd, repeating; at my wife’s request the allegations that had ‘■•aused tier to take so extreme a step. They will now form the basis of proeee lings by propoi process ol law. and 1 enclose a copy of the statements a.s made, sr. that you may judge for yourself whether my wile’s .action was excusable or not.”
