SOUTHLAND ROAD SERVICES

Licences Reviewed

Bus service licences were reviewed by Mr S. V. Raines, South Island Transport Licensing Authority, at a sitting in Invercargilll yesterday. The purpose of the review was to see what services could be eliminated in the interests of tyre conservation. In many cases operators had already made voluntary cuts. Some of these were confirmed yesterday. In other cases the authority reserved his decision.

The Invercargill-Bluff and InvercargillMilford Sound road services were suspended for the duration of the war. These services were suspended voluntarily a few months ago by the operator, H. and H. Motors, Ltd. Decision was reserved in the cases of services run by H. and H. Motors, Ltd., between Invercargill and the following places: Matuku, Ohai, Otautau, Riverton Rocks, Tuatapere, Waikawa and Waimahaka. The reduced road service between Lumsden and Queenstown run by the Railways Department was confirmed, and in the case of the Lumsden-Milford Sound road service run by the department it was decided that it should be run from Lumsden to Te Anau on two days of the week. No alteration was made in the Lumsden-Matuku and Lumsden-Castlerock services. Decision was reserved in the case of the bus service to Garston run by the Railway Department. The Invercargill-Progress Valley and In-vercargill-Wyndham services run by The Southland Daily News Company, Ltd., were suspended for the duration of the war, and decision was reserved in the cases of the services run by this company between Invercargill and the following places:—Dipton, Glenham, Gore, Papatotara and Waitane.

No alteration was made in services run by The Southland Times Company, Ltd., from Invercargill to the following places:—Gummies Bush R.D., Ohai-Invercargill R.D., Glencoe R.D., Gorge Road R.D. and Otara R.D., and from Riverton to Tuatapere R.D. No alterations were made in the following services:—Wyndham-Edendale (P. T. Burns), Invercargill-Lomeville (J. E. Cocklin), Invercargill-Lorneville (G. E. Maltby), Rlverton-Waipango-Pourakino (More and Sons, Ltd.), Colac-Riverton (Robertsons, Ltd.), and Otautau-Blackmount (W. B. Ireland). Decision was reserved in the following cases:—lnvercargill-Riverton (T. W. Craig), Invercargill-Gore (V. Mathieson), Invercar-gill-Winton (T. Mclntosh), Invercargill-Oreti Beach (!’. C. Orr), Invercargill-Eastern Cemetery-Chelmsford Street (D. W. H. (Puffery), Invercargill-Makarewa (A. G. Weavers), Invercarglll-Wallacetown (G. G. Webb). In regard to licences for contract trips, it was decided that a condition should be inserted to permit of the running of essential trips only. The operators concerned were H. and H. Motors, Ltd., The Southland Dally News Co., Ltd., and F. Thomson, Tuatapere.
