Hoskin, Little River. DIED OF SICKNESS Nash, Pte J.; mother, Mrs G. Nash, Hokianga. SOUTHLAND” SOLDIERS Prominent Athlete’s Death Captain P. L. Lynch, who is reported killed in action, was the only son of Mr and Mrs D. Lynch, Nith street. Born in Invercargill 30 years ago, he, was educated at the Marist Brothers School and the Southland Boys’ High School. On leaving school he entered the Department of Justice and served in the office of the Magistrate’s Court from 1930 to 1937, when he was transferred to Christchurch. Before the outbreak of the war he had qualified as an accountant. Captain Lynch was a keen athlete. In Invercargill he played senior football and cricket for Old Boys and he also rowed for the Invercargill Club. He was a keen mountaineer and spent much time in the back country of Otago and Southland. In Christchurch he played football for Varsity and before going overseas and in Egypt he played some fine forward games in Army teams. His last appearance at Rugby Park was towards the end of the 1940 season, when he played an outstanding game for his former team, Old Boys. Captain Lynch enlisted early in the war and almost at once he was selected for training as an N.C.O. Later he was posted to { the Officer Cadet Training Unit and then he went overseas with the 4th Reinforcements as a secondlieutenant. He took part in the Libya campaign a year ago and in the fighting in the Western Desert earlier this year. He had been promoted to tem-porary-captain just before his death. 2nd Lieutenant C. C. McDonald, who has been killed in action, was a son of Mr Duncan McDonald, Strathmore, Dipton. At the outbreak of war he was agent at Winton for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., and enlisted with the Ist Echelon. Before that he was employed by Watts & Grieve, Ltd. He was a well-known footballer and had travelled extensively. Corporal S. E. Young, who has been reported wounded, is the younger sop of Mrs E. M. Young, Tuatapere. He is 25 years of age and proceeded overseas with the 2nd Echelon. He has seen service in the Greek and last Libyan campaigns. Corporal Young was well known as a footballer and runner in the Western District and was employed with the Railways Department before enlisting. Lieutenant Paki Coupar West, who has been reported killed in action, was the youngest son of Mr George West, of Riverton, formerly of Bluff. He attended the Bluff School and the Southland Technical College. Lieutenant West was well known in Gore, where he was employed on the staff of the Southland Electric Power Supply as a linesman. He went to Gore in 1938 and before that he was employed on the electrical staff of the Bluff Borough Council. While at Gore he was a playing member of the Pioneer Football Club and he also took part in tennis activities in the district. Lieutenant West possessed a fine singing voice and he was in constant demand at social gatherings while at Gore. A brother, George West, was killed in an air training accident at a northern aerodrome about three years ago.
