LICENCE OF FREEZING WORKS
Proposed Transfer Delayed
The proposed transfer of the Ocean Beach freezing works licence to the Co-operative Wholesale Society of Great Britain has been held up for another two weeks in order to give the Electoral Committee of the Meat Board an opportunity to submit an alternative proposal to the board. South Island representatives on the committee met the board in Wellington last week, but no finality was reached. It is understood that a part interest will be taken over by the Co-operative Wholesale Society as soon as the transfer of the licence is approved. Since the announcement was made in The Southland Times on October 10 that the negotiations were in the final stages, considerable interest has been aroused among farmers in Southland. A special meeting of farmers was held in Invercargill on October 14, w “£ n opposition to any transfer of the licence to the Co-operative Wholesale Society was expressed. The opinion was expressed that producers should have been fully informed of any negotiations for the sale or transfer of the works. It was decided to send telegrams of protest against the proposed transfer to the Government and the Meat Board. ... When the Southland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union met on October 23 a motion was passed stating that the Southland delegates to the Electoral Committee of the Meat Board had the full confidence and support of all Southland farmers in the question of the proposed transfer of the licence.
