WAIKATO COALFIELDS

Better Spirit Prevails (P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 30. “Since the men returned to work a transformation has come over the Waikato mining district,” said the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, when referring to his visit to Huntly. "The utmost goodwill prevails all round and everybody appears to appreciate the need for increased coal production.” He said the control board had met the Industrial Production Council and the pit committees last night and the feeling on all sides had been excellent. Never before had there been such close co-operation between the representatives of the companies and the miners.

“What I saw was that a most inspiring spirit of goodwill had been introduced which will last a long time,” Mr Webb said. Both sides had agreed that there had been a lot of exaggeration concerning the men staying away from work deliberately, and he intended taking up the question of absenteeism among the Maoris with the Minister in charge of the Maori war effort, the Hon. P. K. Paikea. Neither pakeha nor Maori would be allowed to hold up production. Mr Webb added that co-operative trucking was releasing more experienced men for work on the coal face.
