BLUFF NEWS
PATRIOTIC KNITTING GUILD.— Mrs J. Hargest and Mrs J. Mcllwraith, of Invercargill, paid a visit to Bluff on Tuesday and at the Seaman’s Rest met Mrs M. Hutton, wife of the missioner, and members of the women’s patriotic knitting guild. It was decided that in future members would concentrate on knitting for the Merchant Navy and that garments previously sent to the Dunedin Navy League would in future be handed to Mrs Hutton for distribution to the men on overseas vessels, leaving Bluff as their last port of call. FALSE ALARM.— At 7.15 yesterday morning Bluff residents were awakened by the prolonged whistling of the siren. Firemen turned out for duty and although it was not the pre-arranged signal for an alert, many E.P.S. members also reported to their stations. However, the long whistling was caused by a short circuit in the fire alarm system caused by the extremely strong wind.
