ARMOURED CLASH ON ALAMEIN FRONT
AXIS FORCES REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSSES
(United Press Association— Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, October 28. In the biggest armoured clash of the present battle on the Alamein front the Bth Army yesterday drove off an Axis tank force with little loss to itself. Further progress has been made by the attacking British force. The mid-day communique from Cairo states: “During Monday night further progress was made by our troops. Yesterday an armoured clash on a bigger scale than anything yet seen in the battle developed and the enemy was driven off. His losses of tanks were considerable, but our own losses were light. There was no abatement of our air attacks yesterday and on Monday. A Junkers 87 was shot down and others were damaged by our night-fighters. Yesterday our light bombers concentrated on landing-grounds and the Mersa Matruh forward dock area. The enemy lost 13 Stukas in an attack on our positions. The enemy’s losses for the day were 18 planes. Six of our planes are missing.”
