INSPECTOR OF STOCK
New Appointment For Mr O. 0. Mackley
Mr O. O. Mackley, senior inspector of stock at Invercargill, whose services have been retained beyond the retiring age by the Department of Agriculture under the War Emergency Regulations, has been appointed acting principal inspector for the Otago and Southland provinces to fill the position made vacant by the transfer of Mr R. H. Denize, of Dunedin, as principal inspector for the Wellington district. Mr G. Millar, of Auckland, will succeed Mr Mackley as inspector of stock at Invercargill. The transfers will take place at once, but Mr Mackley’s headquarters will remain at Invercargill in the meantime.
Mr Mackley joined the Live-Stock Division of the department in Wellington and was stock inspector at Wanganui, Woodville and other centres before being appointed to Southland 16 years ago. He has become prominent for his activities in the organization of labbit boards. When he was appointed to Invercargill there was only one rabbit board in existence in his district and it was not functioning. Mr Mackley showed enthusiasm for this branch of his work and has been instrumental in the establishment of 14 rabbit boards in Southland, covering a very large percentage of the cultivated land of the province. He also inspired the formation of the Southland Rabbit Boards Council, which has been functioning for a short time with considerable success. Mr Mackley has been a popular figure in the farming and commercial communities and he has many friends throughout the province. He has been described as the most expert organizer of rabbit boards in New Zealand.
