OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM COX One of Gore's oldest and best known residents, Mr William Cox, died on Sunday Mr Cox was bom at Invercargill 70 years ago, being a son of the late Ml - and Mb John Cox. He was educated at Invercargill and Forest Hill. At an early age Mr Cox went to live it Gore and he spent the early part of his youth at the sawmilling trade, later takinj up butchering. He worked for several years with the late Messrs G. F. Inder and M. R Lawlor, and after spending 13 years wltl the latter he bought him out. After 21 years of bubsiness at Gore he retired be. cause of ill-health. He .was one of tht early members of the Gore Volunteer Firt

Brigade, the Gore Bowling Club, the Gore Racing Club, the Gore Trotting Club, the Gore and District Early Settlers' Association, the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and he was one of the original members of the Druids' Lodge. He was also an original member of the Excelsior Football Club, and was a member of the Gore Anglican Church. His wife died two years ago and he is survived by four daughtersMR PATRICK DALY The death of Mr Patrick Daly, a former well-known resident of the Gore district, occurred at Dunedin last Saturday. He was born at Dungarvin, Ireland, 91 years ago, and was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs D. Daly. He came to New Zealand about 1872, landing at Port Chalmers. For

about six years he was engaged in farming operations in the Milton district. He then moved to Dunedin, where he was employed on the construction of the Caversham tunnel. He was later engaged in construction work for the Railways Department. About 1879 he moved to Gore and for a time he was engaged on the work of constructing the Waimea railway line. About 1889 Mr Daly began road contracting work and for a period he held a cartage contract with the Gore Borough Council. Later he began a milk run at Gore and this he carried on until about 15 years ago. when he retired to live at Dunedin. His wife, who was Miss Margaret Cowley, died about 30 years ago. He is survived by six of a family.
