MANY APPEALS
BOARD HAS BUSY DAY The Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board began hearing appeals of men drawn in the seventeenth ballot at a sitting held at the Invercargill Courthouse yesterday. The board had a very busy day with morning, afternoon and evening sessions. The evening session was taken up with the hearing of appeals by the Railways Department on behalf of 134 employees. The other cases heard during the day concerned men in a variety of industries. There was a fairly large proportion of farm workers. Decision in the railway cases was reserved, but in the majority of the other cases sine die adjournments were granted. Mr E. H. Murney presided at the sitting of the board and with him were Messrs D. H. Cockbum and D. W. Stalker. Mr J. W. Hinchey, secretary of the board, represented the Crown. The board will sit again today. In the following cases sine die adjournments were granted with a proviso in the majority of the cases that the reservists should serve in the Home Guard or the E.P.S.:—Fleming and Co., Ltd., for Fergus T. Crombie, farmer, Kennington; Doherty’s Lime Co., Ltd., Invercargill, for John T. McCarthy, lime works contractor, Winton; Alexander Baxter, farmer, Kapuka; Clifden Lime Co., Ltd., for James L. G. Chamberlain, works manager, Tuatapere; same for Verrail H. Gilbert, foreman, Tuatapere; Maurice A. Cook, farmer, Otara R.D.; J. V. Nicholson and Son, engineers, Bluff, for Gordon W. Giles, blacksmith’s engineer, Bluff; Richard W. Crow, farmer, Tussock Creek; Michael Concannon, farmer, Woodlands; M. Corkery for Thomas F. Crooks and Sons Ltd., Invercargill, for David Burgess, excavator driver; John C. Affleck, farmer, Heddon Bush R.D.; Massey, Harris Co., Ltd. for Francis W. R. Barnett, serviceman and salesman; Hugh C. L. Baird, farmer, Winton; J. Crooks and Sons, Ltd., for George E. Evans, traction engine driver; Browns Lime Co. for Aubrey P. Wilson, farmer, Browns; John C. Bickley, farmer, Waimatuku; J. G. Ward and Co., Ltd., for John J. Casey, lime works employee, Limehills; same for John H. Hammond, quarryman, Limehills. The following appeals were dismissed:—T. R. Taylor Ltd., Invercargill, for William F. Stenton, metal turner (as at January 31, 1943); Doherty’s Lime Co., Ltd. for Charles E. Frisby, quarryman, Winton (as at March 31, 1943); Royds Bros, and Kirk Ltd. for Cyril W. Treeby, buyer; Beck and McKenzie Ltd., motor engineers, Invercargill, for Truesdale R. Beck, mechanic (as at December 31, 1942).

To December 31, 1942.—J. V. Nicholson, Bluff, and S. Ward Ltd., Invercargill, for William Dunlop, fitter and turner. (Dunlop objected to the appeal and in a statement handed to the board said he was anxious to join the armed forces); N.Z. Milk Products Ltd. for Simon Alderson, factory employee. To March 31, 1943.—J0hn R. McLean, farmer and shearer, Makarewa; George Brown, farm contractor, Aparima; D. S. McLaren, farmer, Eastern Bush, for Wallace Chamberlain, farm worker. To April 30, 1943.—Franklin S. Carlene, farmer, Otara R.D. An appeal by Massey, Harris Co., Ltd., for the withdrawal from camp of Charles J. Neilands, commercial traveller, was not granted. Extension of leave to December 31 was granted to Maurice E. Maloney on the appeal of his father, C. Maloney, farmer, West Plains. An application by J. G, Ward and Co., Ltd., for the release from camp of Basil William Paul, lime worker, was refused.
Leave from camp was granted as follows: —Doherty’s Lime Co., Ltd., for David C. Jolly (indefinite).
