BIG FIRE IN SYDNEY
Damage Exceeds £lOO,OOO
(Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 27, Damage estimated at more than £lOO,OOO was done when the city’s most spectacular fire in seven years gutted a five-story factory building in The Glebe. The premises were occupied by five manufacturing firms, whose 700 employees will be unemployed for some weeks at least.
Five adjoining houses were wrecked by crashing masonry and others were damaged. The cause of the fire is not known.
Fifteen thousand persons watched the blaze, which was the biggest in Sydney since Goldsbrough Mort’s wool store was gutted in September 1935.
