TRAIN STRIKES CAR
Four Men Suffer Injuries
(P.A.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Oct 27. Four residents of Palmerston North, well-known in racing circles, were involved in an accident at the Ohau railway crossing last night. As a result two are now in hospital. They were returning from the Trentham races in a car owned by G. W. New and driven by L. G. Morris, both trainers. They had with them two passengers, G., New, jun., and an apprentice jockey, A. G. Waddell.
As they approached the crossing in poor visibility the driver noticed a train which he thought was stationary. It proved, however, to be travelling. In order to avoid being hit the driver of the car swerved, but was unable to clear the train. The car was struck and turned over and badly smashed, all the four occupants receiving injuries. Waddell, who was asleep in the back, received a cut on the scalp and concussion. He was admitted to hospital and his condition is comfortable. New, sen., received cuts and severe bruising possibly fractured ribs, and was removed to hospital today for observation.
