LIBERTY WAR LOAN APPLICATIONS
Southland Contributions
Up to last Saturday Southland applications for bonds in the second Liberty war loan totalled £90,830, according to a report placed before the Southland general committee yesterday by the secretary (Mr W. G. Nield). He said £260,000 remained to be found to reach the Southland objective of £350,000. Apart from £50,000 from the Invercargill Savings Bank and £5OOO from the Southland Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., £25,000 had come from the Invercargill city and £BOOO from the country. It appeared that more efforts would have to be made to increase country contributions. Mr A. H. J. Wyatt said it was. his experience that country contributions were beginning to come in more rapidly. Mr A. W. Rodger said the Ohai Railway Board had decided to invest £5OOO in the loan subject to the approval of the Local Bodies Loans Board.
The importance of a personal canvass in the country districts was discussed, and it was decided to arrange for representatives of the central or local committees to attend important clearing sales and approach farmers present to contribute to the loan. It was also suggested that the co-operation of executive members of the Farmers’ Union should be enlisted. The following promises were reported:—Linton Coal Company, £1000; Invercargill Saleyards Company, £lOO.
