Sporting BASHFUL LADY’S PROSPECTS
MAY EQUAL ALMA’S SUCCESS The ease with which Bashful Lady carried 9.5 and won the open sprint at Gore on Saturday was the work of a top-class mare. That performance placed her well in the class of Alma (another Paper Money mare), who won the sprint at Gore five years ago and went on and won the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. Alma carried 9.7 when she won the Flying Handicap at Gore and she carried 8.8 when she won the Stewards’ Handicap. In the latter field the topweight was Gold Boa (9.5), and others above Alma in the handicap were Paper Slipper (9.3), Ben Braggie (9.0) and Oratory (8.10). Alma was the win favourite and won by a length in Imin II 2-ssec. Since Bashful Lady won at Gore the weight she will get in the Stewards’ has been the subject of speculation, and if a guide could be taken through Alma’s performances and weights—by no means a comparable guide—the indications are that she will not get much over 9.0. At the present time Bashful Lady is in rare buckle, and if she retains her form “any old weight” might not stop her. She has proved herself a brilliant galloper up to a mile and she can carry weight. Moreover, she looks like being one of the Paper Moneys who will stay. Bashful Lady has now won eight races and been placed second once in her last nine starts. Her complete race record is 14 starts, nine wins, two seconds and a third fcr £lBlB in stakes. In three races this season she has won £B9O. She is to be nominated for the Southland meeting at Invercargill next month.
Three Wins Invercargill jockeys won three races at Motukarara on Monday, W. F. Ellis on All Night and Last Effort and K. E. Wilson on Supercharge. Ellis’s win on All Night gave him another cup success in the big list of cup and principal race successes he has compiled. Included in the list (totalling 26) are the Dunedin Cup, the Invercargill Cup (twice), the Winter Cup, Riverton Cup, Southland Cup, Wyndham Cup, Winton. Cup (twice), Geraldine Cup, Kurow Cup, Rangiora Cup. McLean Stakes, Champion Hack (Riverton), and King George (Dunedin, twice). Training Success The double success of horses from R. E. McLellan's stable at the Gore meeting on Saturday—Doubleack and Macedoine —was a reward for patience. McLellan has persevered with Doubleack in spite of anything but encouragement from his charge, and he gave Macedoine a good chance to develop. With Sing Sing and other likely sorts in his stable McLellan looks to be in for a successful season. Last season he led in only four winners, but five years ago he established himself as the leading trainer in Southland. Man’s Pal
Pallid, Last Effort and Corday, all winners on Monday, were sired by Man’s Pal, the Southland-owned stallion. Foaling A full sister to Great Shot (Last DartGeranial) has slipped a colt foal to Man’s Pal at Timpany Bros.’ Woodlands stud.
Waikouaiti Cup The Waikouaiti Cup this season will carry a stake of £750.
Salmagundi Salmagundi was represented at Gore by three winners in Tea for Two, Macedoine, and Air Chief, who split winning honours with Golden Belle in the Novice Handicap. Gold Bar
It has been decided to retire Gold Bar, who has a record of Imin 59 2-ssec for a mile, to the stud after the New Zealand Cup meeting next month. Soncy
Soncy, by winning the Wellesley Stakes, makes Invulnerable a good two-year-old as the latter beat her easily in the McLean Stakes. Soncy was got by Theio from Gay Lass, by Lord Quex-Mountain Lass, by Mountain King. She cost 180 guineas as a yearling. Knight of Old Knight of Old, who as a three-year-old nt Invercargill promised to develop into a useful horse, but failed to carry on, is now one of A. E. Didham’s team. He has grown into a fine big horse, and is to be treated to schooling over hurdles. He has already shown ability to jump. Unusual
For the first time in the last 50 years no Victorian horses raced at the A.J.C. spring meeting in Sydney. There was an absence of Victorian and New Zealand three-year-olds in the A.J.C. Derby, but the winner, Main Topic, presented a strong infusion of New Zealand blood through his sire. Talking. whose dam, Society, by Absurd from First Class, by AU Black, was bred in the Wanganui district, writes Sir Modred. The Queensland Guineas and the Queensland Derby Stakes, two of Queensland’s best three-year-old races, have been cancelled. No decision has been arrived at regarding the Queensland Cup on November 14.
