OTAUTAU SPORTS MEETING

LARGE CROWD AND KEEN CONTESTS Favoured by ideal weather the 20th annual sports meeting of the Otautau Athletic Society held at Holt Park yesterday was a marked success. It was a well deserved success because in deciding to hold its meeting in spite of the adverse conditions created by the war the society showed both courage and enterprise. It is possible that the example of the Otautau Society will induce other athletic societies in the province to hold their annual fixtures later in the season. There was a large attendance. The takings at the gate amounted to £173, only slightly less than last year’s takings. More than 1000 persons arrived in Otautau by the special train from Invercargill. The majority were from the city, but a large number joined the train at stations en route. Considering the fact that so many athletes are now serving with the armed forces the entries for the various events were satisfactory. Generally speaking the events were keenly contested, and there were several finishes that provided the spectators with a real thrill. G. McDougall was the most successful runner, winning the 75 yards, 220 yards and 440 yards handicaps. He won the 220 yards so easily that for the 440 he was put back to the three yards mark, but he again had a comfortable win.

In the cycling R. McDougall, after coming second to J. McKenzie in the half-mile, won the mile and the mile and a-half. McDougall was on scratch for the first two races and was put 10 yards behind scratch for the mile and a-half.

T. Lee won the main chopping event, the 14-inch underhand. During an interval in the programme the Mayor of Invercargill, Mr A. Wachner, who was among the visitors from the city, presented the prize for this event to Lee. The same competitor won the 12-inch standing chop. The prize for the most points in the dancing events was won by Miss Madge Robertson. During the afternoon races for the children were held. These attracted big fields and gave the youngsters plenty of fun and excitement. Following are the results:— RUNNING 100 Yards Maiden; seven entries— V. Hoover 1, C. McArthur 2, R. Hishon 3.
