TOURNAMENT AT GORE Excellent entries were received for the Gore Golf Club’s Labour Day week-end tournament, which began on Saturday afternoon with a four-ball bogey match, and although conditions both on Saturday and yesterday were unfavourable, some good cards were returned. The men's championship matches were held yesterday and today a women’s tournament and two men’s matches will be conducted. The men’s senior championship, which was held yesterday, was won by D. C. Bennie, a well-known Dunedin player who has taken a prominent part in Southland tournaments for a number of years. Bennie, a scratch player, produced some excellent ferm and secured a comfortable win. In the merning round he took 87 to complete the 18 holes and his chances at this stage did not look particularly bright for a win. In the afternoon round, however, he played outstanding golf and completed the round in 74, this giving him a total of 161, which was 11 strokes better than the total of the runner-up, P. B. Barnett (Wyndham). J. P. Steans (Gore) displayed consistent form to secure a comfortable win in the intermediate championship with a total of 174. Steans took 87 for the morning round and in the afternoon he took a similar number of strokes to complete the round. A. S. Atkins and G. R. Martin tied for second place and they decided the issue by a toss of the coin, Atkins being successful. W. F. Young (Gore) won the junior championship with a score of 193, T. M. Grade being runner-up with 198. At the end of play yesterday the president of the club, Mr J. A. S. Aitken, presented the prizes and congratulated the winners. He thanked the visiting players for their support. Following are the scores:— Senior Championship.—D. C. Bennie, 87-74-161; P. B. Barnett, 91-81-172; A. Cullen, 84-89-173. C. R. Barron, L. G. Thomson, W. McElligott, E. S. Thomson and C. Hichon all returned scores of 175. Intermediate Championship.—J. P. Steans, 87-87-174; A. S. Atkins, 94-92-186; G. R. Martin, 94-92-186. G. H. Burgess and D. S. McLeod, each with scores of 190, were next in order. Junior Championship.—W. F. Young, 99-94-193; T. M. Gracie, 99-99-198; H. A. Robins, 101-100-201. A. Gracie had already won the medal aggregate, the prize for runner-up in this event was awarded to Rebins.
Medal Matches.—Senior (morning): J. P. Steans, 87-13-74; G. B. Miller, 85-9-76; C. R. Barron, 85-9-76. As Steans had already won the intermediate championship, the prize for this event was awarded to Miller, who beat Barron on the count back. Afternoon match: D. C. Bennie, 74-0-74; J. P. Steans, 87-13-74; L. G. Thomson, 86-8-78. The prize for this event went to Thomson, Bennie and Steans already having won prizes. Thomson won on the count back from E. S. Thomson and P. B. Barnett. Junior (morning): T. M. Gracie, 99-22-75; D. S. McLeod, 93-16-77. McLeod was awarded the prize for this event as Gracie had already won the medal aggregate. Afternoon match: W. F. Young, 94-20-74; F. Hoyle, 93-18-75; Hoyle secured the prize in this match, Young having already won the junior championship.
Medal aggregate (nett): J. P. Steans, 74-74-148; T. M. Gracie, 75-75-150; A. S. Atkins, 77-75-152. Gracie was awarded the prize in tills event as Steans had already won a prize. On Saturday afternoon a four-ball bogey match was played, a good field taking part. The match was won by J. P. Bishop and R. E. Sutherland, who finished all square.
