APPLE STOCKS TO BE CLEARED

Maximum Retail Price 6d Per Lb

WELLINGTON, October 24.

The Internal Marketing Division has been instructed by the Government to dispose of the remaining stocks of apples in cool stores at wholesale prices that will ensure that the maximum retail price will not exceed 6d per lb, said the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) today. This procedure becomes operative on Monday next and will continue until existing stocks are exhausted. A price order has been prepared to operate from Monday next fixing the wholesale price of apples at 13/6 a case.

The Minister said that the quantity available was strictly limited and the fairest policy was to ration the fruit on to the market in even monthly quantities. Retailers were asked to cooperate in making the procedure a success by ensuring that the fruit was apportioned fairly between regular customers and every effort be made for the existing supplies to last until the end of next month, possibly into the first week of December. It is hoped that, with every indication of favourable climatic conditions, the new season’s stone fruit will be available very shortly after the existing stocks of apples are exhausted.
