Men up to 45 years of age (and in special cases up to 50) with not more than three children, and of good character and intelligence are required, but special qualifications and previous knowledge of the sea not necessary. Electrical or mechanical knowledge an advantage but not essential. Selected candidates required to undergo a medical examination not as stringent as required for service afloat. Those appointed will be entered as Able Seamen, and paid as such with usual allowances.
