WANTED TO JOIN ARMY
Teacher Refused Leave
Because of the acute shortage of teachers with which it is faced, the Southland Education Board at its meeting yesterday refused a request from a head teacher to leave his position in order to take up an appointment with the Army for the duration of the war. The teacher in his application stated: “While I realize that it is the general policy of the Education Board to appeal for teachers of Grade IV schools, I submit that there are some exceptional circumstances in my own case. I have held a commission in the Territorial Force for some time and in addition spent two years at the Royal Military College in Australia. Indifferent health prevented my enlistment when that was allowed, but I am now much improved in health and feel strongly that I should be serving with the forces. I have received an assurance from the Army authorities that if you will agree to release me I shall be recommended for appointment.”
