Mr C. S. Stevens was reappointed the representative of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union on the executive of the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs Association yesterday. Mr D. Hunter, of Wyndham, is acting postmaster at Otautau during the absence on annual leave of Mr E. T. Silverwood.
Tributes to the good work done by Mr T. K. Fisher, town clerk at Mataura, who has accepted an appointment at Timaru, during his stay at Mataura were made by councillors, former councillors and others at a social held in his honour. A presentation of a barometer was made to Mr Fisher by the Mayor, Mr C. D. McConnell, on behalf of the council.
The following appointments were confirmed at a meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday:—Mr M. L. Govan, sole teacher at Menzies Ferry; Mr I. G. Wilson, assistant at Nightcaps; Miss Margaret C. Lockerbie, sole teacher at Otapiri; Miss Annie M. Smith, assistant mistress at Invercargill South. Major Murray A. Falconer has been appointed neuro-surgeon at the Duqjedin Hospital. He is at present a specialist to St. Hughes Military Hospital. Educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago University, he went to England in 1934 and was a surgical research scholar at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, being nominated by the British Medical Research Council. He was the first student to be nominated by the combined Dominion universities for a Nuffield Fellowship at Oxford, specializing for three years in neuro-surgery. He is a son of Dr A. R. Falconer, formerly medical superintendent of Dunedin Hospital. A Government grant enabled the appointment to be made. Major Falconer’s services will be available to other centres. —PA..
