RELEASE OF LABOUR FROM CAMPS
Some serious cases of hardship have occurred among Southland farmers in securing labour, according to reports submitted to the Southland Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. It was stated that a widow living ’in the Eastern District had been unable to obtain any assistance and had had to do harrowing in the fields herself. While there were some cases of hardship, said the secretary (Mr A. L. Adamson), the position was better than it was a month ago. He had been successful in handling applications for the release of a number of shearers from camp. There was a difficulty about some men In overseas units in North Island camps, but the Director of National Service had stated that if the primary production councils were convinced that such men were essential he would recommend their release. Applications for the release of men to do only their own shearing would not be entertained.
