A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

Advice that the South Island Friesian bull and cow championships for 1942 had been allotted to the association for competition at its annual show on December 2 was received from the New Zealand Friesian Association at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. A letter from the Friesian Association stated that the winner of each championship held a silver challenge cup as from the show date until such date as the championships were next competed for, and that the association gave to each winner an engraved medal. . . The Southland branch of the Friesian Association advised that it had been decided to give £3 to the Friesian classes at the show. .. , , It was decided that only licensed showmen be allowed on the ground. It was decided to give £2/2/- to the funds of the Southland Boys* and Girls Clubs Association. Mr F. F. Trapski was re-elected the association’s representative on that association. PERSONAL.—The death of Mr M. K. Lawlor, a life member of the association, was referred to by the president, Mr G. W. Whittingham, at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral As-, sociation yesterday. Mr Lawlor was well known throughout Eastern Southland, both in business and sporting circles. , He took a leading part in racing and dog trials as well as the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He would be greatly missed, Mr Whittingham said. A motion of sympathy with the relations was carried. OBITUARY. —The death occurred at Gore of Mr James Taylor Bain, a well-known resident who had lived in Eastern Southland for 55 years. Mr Bain was born at Glasgow in 1872 and he arrived at Port Chalmers with his parents in 1874. He received his education at Otaraia and Wyndham. At the age of 11 Mr Bain began work driving a team of four horses on the Edendale Estate for his brother who was contract ploughing there. He went to the Gore district when he was about 15 and was employed on various farms in the district. For some years he worked on the dredges at Chariton and then went to the employ of Mr G. W. Whittingham, where he remained for 22 years. He was a member of the Gore Trotting Club, the Gore Racing Club and the Druids Lodge. In 1904 he was married at Gore to Miss Helen Bacon. He is survived by his wife, one son, Mr G. Bain (Gore) and one daughter, Miss K. Bain <C WASTE PAPER—Good work has been done at Gore to aid the campaign for the collection of waste paper, and since the depot in Mersey street was opened 39 bales and 17 bags, more than five tons of paper, have been sent to the Mataura paper mills. A large amount of waste rubber, comprising tvres bum-boots and hot water bottles, has also been collected and has been sorted at the depot in readiness for grading by the Government inspector. GOLF TOURNAMENT— The excellent total of 62 entries has been received by the Gore Golf Club for a tournament to be held at the club’s links at Croydon this afternoon Sunday and Monday. The main part of tlie tournament will be tomorrow, and on Monday a women’s tournament will be held. , . . BOWLS—Good entries have been received for a pairs tournament which will be conducted by the Gore Bowling Club on the Gore and Hokonui greens on Labour Day. Play will begin at 8.30 a.m. and section play covering three games of one and a-half hours each will be held.
