ATTRACTIONS ON LABOUR DAY
SPORTING FIXTURES The prospects of a successful Labour Day week-end will be determined largely by the weather. Last night the weather was cold and “doubtful.” For a war year the list of sporting fixtures which have been arranged in Southland is a comprehensive one, and with the exception of cricket and swimming almost every summer sport has been catered for. The Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting today will be a popular attraction, and in spite of transport restrictions it is expected that there will be a large crowd present. Golfers will be catered for at Gore, where the first day of a three-day tournament will be begun on the Gore Club’s links. The attractions for Monday include the populai- Otautau sports meeting, bowls tournaments at Northend, Waikiwi and Gore greens, a tennis tournament at Winton, and golf at Gore and Queen’s Park. Southland anglers will not be engaged in competition fishing this year, but many of them will be on the rivers during the week-end. Most of the rivers are in good order and are well stocked, and good fishing should be available. The Mataura, which has been discoloured, is showing improvement, and the Oreti, although carrying snow water, is in fair condition. The list of fixtures is as follows:— TODAY
Winton R.S.A. Bowling Club’s opening. Kennington-Invercargill cycle race. Archery Club’s shoot. Golf tournament at Gore.
MONDAY Otautau sports meeting. Bowls tournament at Northend, Waikiwi and Gore. Progressive pairs (bowls) at Te Rangi. „ , _ , Golf tournaments at Queens Park and Gore. Tennis tournament at Winton.
