Lynch, Nith street. . Mrs W. Parish, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs A. T. Gulliver, Kelvin street. Miss Merle Gulliver, Kelvin street, is spending a holiday in Wellington and Christchurch. At a social afternoon at the Womens Club yesterday Miss W. McNaughton gave a talk on vocational guidance. She was introduced by Mrs J. D. Gilmore, who presented her with a shoulder spray. Mrs A. C. Dickens thanked Miss McNaughton for the interesting address. Madame Mae Brodie, of Rangitata Island, Geraldine, the New Zealand mezzo-soprano, who has been visiting Invercargill, left by train last night accompanied by her pianist, Dr E. Kost. Yesterday Madame Brodie visited the Southland Boys’ High School and gave a delightful programme of British, French, Italian and German songs. The boys were a most appreciative audience. Madame Brodie heard the school sextet, whose singing she highly praised. She spoke enthusiastically about the fine voice possessed by J. Thompson and said he undoubtedly had remarkable possibilities as a singer. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Joyce Emma, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. F. Kilpatrick, 25 Thames street, to Sapper John Nisbet Shirreffs, New Zealand Engineers, third son of Mr and Mrs N. Shirreffs, 165 Bowmont street.

PATRIOTIC NOTES

The packing of parcels will continue next week at the depot, with the Gladstone committee on Monday and Tuesday, patriotic workers from Ryal Bush all day on Wednesday and the North Invercargill committee on Thursday and Friday. Knitted goods have been received from the following: Collingwood Women’s Institute. Waimahaka, Bay Road, Taramoa, Wrights Bush, Gladstone, Drummond, North Invercargill, Avenal, Rimu, Edendale, Central, Waikiwi, Wyndham, Makarewa, Kennington, South A. SUB-COMMITTEES REPORTS Central.—Knitting is acknowledged from the Girls’ High School and individual knitters. North Invercargill.—The committee has handed in this week 11 balaclavas, 5 scarves, 17 pairs of socks, 7 pairs of gloves, and 2 pairs of mittens. It wishes to thank knitters and Mrs Stewart and Mrs Ellis for donations of knitting. South B.—The meeting of the committee will be held at the residence of Mrs Milligan at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday next. Avenal-Northend.—The committee has handed in 22 pairs of mittens, 20 scarves, 9 pairs of gloves, 6 pairs of socks and 12 balaclavas. It also wishes to thank Lady Hunt for a donation of five skull caps and four scarves.

RED CROSS NEWS

Answer to Inquirer.—Yes, all donations from sub-centres and individuals forwarded to the local society and expressly earmarked for sick and wounded or prisoners of war parcels fund go forward to headquarters, Wellington. Besides, from time to time the local society sends forward donations to headquarters from its general fund. Next week the members of North Invercargill will be in charge of the depot, Esk street. The members of Georgetown committee will visit the hospital to help with the sewing if required. The society acknowledges with thanks the following donations:—Waimatuku sub-centre £4O; Taramoa Citizens’ Association, £10; Otahuti sub-centre, £2; Northend, £l/1/-; Mrs Stratton, 10/-; parcels from Wyndham, Edendale sub-centres and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Wyndham and Miss Goodson. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS Georgetown.—On Wednesday a successful social afternoon was held when gifts were received for the forthcoming street day. A sum of £9 was taken in collections. The committee acknowledges with thanks donations from Mr McKenzie, 5/-; Miss Malcolm, 10/-; Anonymous, 5/-. There will be a meeting of the committee on Wednesday, October 28, at 2 p.m., and a general meeting of members the same day at 2.30 p.m. to make arrangements for the forthcoming street day. A full attendance is requested. South. —A successful garden party was held at the residence of Mrs John Thomson, Grace street, on Saturday, October 17, when £43/18/- was taken, making in all £53/18/towards the committee’s efforts. The members wish to thank all for making the afternoon so successful.

Gladstone. —Members will meet on Tuesday, October 27, at the residence of Mrs Gilkison at 7 2.15 p.m. Waikiwi. —The sewing guild will meet on Thursday, October 29, at 2.30 p.m., in the residence of Mrs P. A. Price, North road, when sewing for the Joint Council will be done.

Joint Committee of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society.—The committee acknowledges with thanks the following donation:—Waimatuku, Red Cross subcentre, £4O for Prisoners of War Fund.

Voluntary Aid Notices.—The hygiene and sanitation class will be held on Tuesday, October 27. at 7.15 p.m. Because of the blackout there will be no home-nursing class on Wednesday. The class will be held on Wednesday, November 4, at 7.15 p.m. A new first-aid class will begin on Monday, November 2, in the V.A. room.
