AUSTRALIAN MINERALS

Purchase By United States

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Oct. 22. America is sending a special economic mission to Australia to procure bigger quantities of raw materials for her war industries. It is understood that the mission will propose that American business concerns should invest large sums of money to help in the development of Australia’s mineral resources. Some of the commodities wanted by America in increasing quantities are zinc, lead and copper. America is also taking from Australia heavily increased quantities of wool, all kinds of skins and some sugar. Four of the five specialists will shortly come to Australia represnting the United States Board of Economic Warfare. They will be the permanent representatives of the board in Australia to assist in the supply problems of the two nations. The board handles private as well as Government transactions and differs from the Lease-Lend Mission, which deals exclusively in the Government exchange of supplies.
