“It was one of the best performances ever put on in Invercargill,’* said the Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, at the meeting of the executive of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday in reference to the entertainment to raise money for the patriotic fund given by the nurses of Kew Hospital in the Civic Theatre. It was reported that as a result of the entertainment £126 had been raised for the fund. Another contribution to the fund was reported. It amounted to £lOl/6/- and was from H. and J. Smith, Ltd., the proceeds of a mannequin parade held by the firm. It was stated that 1013 persons had attended the parade. Referring to the recent effort of the Invercargill R.S.A. to raise money for the prisoners of war fund, Mr P. L. Hodge said that the amount in hand was £lOO4, and it was expected that the total would be raised to £l5OO. The following amounts had been received:—From the Traders’ Patriotic Assistance Committee, £490; concert by the band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force at the show grounds, £6l; other concerts by the band, about £250; dance at St. Mary’s Hall, £ll4. The R.S.A., Mr Hodge added, was making a special appeal to its members for subscriptions to the fund and £6O had already been promised.
