Sporting GOOD GALLOP BY SPANISH LAD

ROYAL LANCER ALSO TRAINS ON Spanish Lad, winner of the Invercargill Cup last year, is fast getting into shape for his engagements. On the Southland course yesterday morning he registered the best sprint of the morning and cut out six furlongs, 18ft from the rails and against a strong wind, in Imin 17 4-ssec. The first half-mile took 52 4-ssec. Spanish Lad revelled in the good going and finished strongly. He will have his first start for the new season in the sprint at Gore on Saturday, and on track work he may be capable of extending the favourite. Bashful Lady. Royal Lancer Royal Lancer galloped in company with Spanish Lad and he also raced well. He took no harm from his race at Wingatui and is looking a picture at present. Royal Lancer will probably be given a run at the Southland meeting next month preparatory to tackling the New Zealand Cup. Whiphand Whiphand, the Ringmaster-Anklet gelding in F. J. Boyle’s stable, was schooled over four fences yesterday morning and shaped well. He will probably be given a race over hurdles at the Dunedin summer meeting. Agcratum Ageratum and Dark Colleen, candidates in the highweight at Gore, were companions over seven furlongs yesterday morning. The mare had the edge on Ageratum, but neither was extended at the finish of the journey run in Imin 35 2-ssec. Anglo-Irish Anglo-Irish appears to have benefited from his outing at Wingatui, and yesterday morning he shaded Colonel Rouge in a smart work-out over seven furlongs. He may be ready to run a good race in the President’s Handicap at Gore. Inquiry "Wager” (Gore). —W. F. Ellis has won on Royal Lancer 12 times; he won on Mona’s Song 10 times. Happy Ending Last year’s winner of the New Zealand Cup. Happy Ending, is missing from this year’s entries. He has been unsound since the National meeting. Not Yet Royal Lancer has built up an imposing list of successes in little more than three seasons of racing, but he has not yet won a race on the Southland Club’s racecourse at Invercargill. Unlucky The unlucky runner in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie is claimed to have been Royal Glory, who was “left" and made up ground so quickly that a furlong from home she was up with the leaders. Royal Glory is out of Bravado, a daughter of War Scare (half-sister to Bobrikoff). At Wyndham The Wyndham track is in excellent order at present and the track presents a busy appearance each morning. E. Todd has a full stable, his main difficulty at present being to secure the necessary help. Of the 10 horses in work four are now ready to go to the races, these being Monaco. Debtor, Saskatoon and Danny Malone, all of whom have been nominated for the Invercargill trots on October 31. Saskatoon has also been paid up for at Gore on Saturday. All four are working well. The remainder of the team has yet to go to the races. It comprises Loyal Bloom (four-year-old by Grattan Loyal-Azaleas), Sunny Grattan (four-year-old by Grattan Loyal-Sungod mare), three-year-old filly by Sandydale-All Sunshine, three-year-old filly by SandydaleBright Star, three-year-old colt by Grattan Loyal-Latest News (full brother to Communique) and a half-brother to Monaco by Quite Sure. J. McLennan is working a select team, two of whom Best Seller (a winner at Invercargill last season) and Dillondale, claim engagements at Invercargill next week. He has just finished handling two two-year-old fillies by Quite Sure from First Author and First Moko respectively, and a gelding by Arion Axworthy-First Author. An interesting foaling is a colt foal to Aqua Bond, by Quite Sure. First Water, the dam of Aqua Bond, is now 22 years old, and is due to foal to Dillon Hall. Aqua Bond has a mile saddle record of 2min Bsec. A. Robertson is working three horses, including the evergreen Coherto, who is booked to contest the big race at Invercargill. Beau Cheval, from the same dam as Rangefinder, a recent winner at New Brighton, is also booked to make his appearance at Invercargill. He is also handling an attractive two-year-old by Quite Sure from an Adioo Guy mare. J. Shaw has Dunalister in good shape for early racing, and the Sungod gelding will make his reappearance at Invercargill next week. The only thoroughbred on the track is being handled by O. Kirby, this being an upstanding chestnut by Straightcourse-Pax, Kirby is also educating a trotter by Maxegin.
