Mr B. C. McCabe, of Wellington, supervising valuer of the State Advances Corporation, has returned north after a brief visit to Invercargill. Mr E. E. Earnshaw, postmaster at Wyndham, resumed duty yesterday after annual leave. Mr T. Daniel has been appointed caretaker of the Civic Theatre in place of Mr J. Harry, who recently left to take a position in Nelson. The appointment is for the duration of the war. Reference to the death of Sir Robert Anderson yras made at the meeting of the City Council last, night and a motion of sympathy with the relations was carried. In a tribute to Sir Robert, the Mayor, Mr A .Wachner, said he had served the community for many years on public bodies and his generosity was well known. Mr J. J. Nolan is acting postmaster and stationmaster at Waimahaka pending the arrival of Mr D. B. Kilgour. Mr Kilgour succeeds Mr J. Stewart, who has been transferred to Edendale. Mr H. A. McColl, patrol officer of the Automobile Association (Southland), has received an appointment on the staff of J. G. Ward and Co., Ltd., Gore. Mr McColl, who was stationed at Gore for about three years, was recently transferred back to Invercargill. He will begin his new duties at Gore about the middle of next month. An inscribed silver mug was presented to Cr. G. B. Orbell at the meeting of the City Council last ngiht. It was a gift from his fellow councillors for his small son, who was born a few weeks ago. In expressing thanks Cr Orbell said that no doubt the gift would be passed down in the family as an heirloom in the years to come. A motion of sympathy with Mr F. G. Hall-Jones, New Zealand District Governor of Rotary, in the death of his mother, Lady Hall-Jones, was carried at yesterday’s meeting of the Invercargill Rotary Club, members standing in silence. Congratulations to Cr A. W. Jones on completing 20 years of service on the Baths Committee of the City Council were extended at the meeting o£ the council last night.. In his reply Cr Jones recalled that the proposal to establish tepid baths was carried by a very small majority on a poll of the ratepayers. The then Mayor and several of the councillors were opposed to the project. Members of the Invercargill Rotary Club stood in silence yesterday as a mark of respect to the memory of Sir Robert Anderson, who was one of the foundation members of the club and a vice-president, and was subsequently elected a life member. The club decided to send a letter of sympathy to Lady Anderson. The Government has appointed Mr H. E. Coombs, M.P., and Mr E. Brooking to the National Patriotic Fund Board to fill vacancies caused by the deaths of Messrs J. Read and C. Todd. In announcing the appointments the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said Messrs Combs and Brooking had considerable experience in patriotic and allied work and their services would be particularly helpful. -P.A. A motion of sympathy with the relations of the late Mr George Low, who for many years was an employee of the works department of the City Council, was carried at the meeting of the council last night. The Bledisloe Medal, given to Canterbury Agricultural College by Lora Bledisloe, when Governor-General of New Zealand, for annual presentation to former students who have given notable service to agriculture, has been conferred this year on the present director, Professor E. R. Hudson, B.Sc., B.Agr., Dip. C.A.C. Professor Hudson was appointed director of the college at Lincoln six years ago.
