N.Z. Air Force Beats Guy’s (Special Correspondent, N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, October 17. Leading Aircraftman J. Macdonald, of Marlborough, a former All Black, who subsequently played in England for Streatham-Huddersfield, scored eight points—two tries and one conversion—when the Royal New Zealand Air Force beat Guy’s Hospital by 11 points to nil. Macdonald had not played since 1939, when he had a cartilage removed from his right knee. He turned up to see the match as a spectator, but was invited to play as a result of one member of the team missing his train. The Royal New Zealand Air Force played good bright football and it was an excellent game which the crowd, including the High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan and Mrs Jordan enjoyed. The Royal New Zealand Air Force team comprised the following:—Backs: Sergeant F. Tate (Auckland), Macdonald, Pilot-Officer E. Grant, acting Leading Airman J. Brown (Wellington), Sergeant J. Mee (Dunedin), SubLieutenant N. Lawrence, C. Saundercock. Forwards: Sergeants L. Dustin (Palmerston North), G. Stevens (Marton), A. Matheson (Carterton), Corporals T. Blomfield, E. Gray (Auckland), Ordinary Seaman D. S. Hart (Feilding), E. Lewin (Palmerston North), Cadet Ratipg G. Smith (Wellington). . The New Zealanders got a fair share of the ball in the scrums until Hart, the hooker, a former Massey College student, got a painful knock. Macdonald opened the scoring account after a forward rush. Saundercock paved the way for the next try by cutting through from half-way to the opposing team’s goalposts in front of which a scrum was formed. The ball went out neatly to Brown who scored, Macdonald converting. Two minutes before the end Macdonald intercepted and again scored. All the New Zealanders played well, Dustin and Stevens being outstanding among the forwards and also Grant, who was captain as centre. Four South Africans played for Guy’s Mcdonald is training to be a pilot. J
