BOWLlNG.— Conditions could not have been better for the opening of the Gore Bowling Club’s green on Saturday afternoon. The green was in good playing order, and there was an attendance of more than 70 members and visitors. The season was officially declared open by the president, Mr M. Mitchell, who expressed pleasure at the large attendance. The Mayor of Gore, Mr W. D. Shelton, also spoke, congratulating the club on the excellent turn-out and on the fine state of the surroundings. The first ball was rolled by Mrs Mitchell, and subsequently a friendly match, president v. vice-presi-dent, was played. The former team won by 155 points to 131. LAWN TENNIS.— There was an attendance of about 30 members and visitors at the official opening of the St. Andrew’s Tennis Club, which was held on Saturday afternoon in ideal conditions. The courts were declared open for play by the patron of the club, the Rev. F. B. Barton, and Mrs T. L. Macdonald, a vice-president of the club, hit the first ball. Mr L. O. Wallis (president) also spoke. During the afternoon a tournament was held, the women’s section being won by Miss F. Nicol and the men’s by L. Gerken. CRICKET.—A friendly cricket match between an Army team from a southern military camp and a combined Gore side was played at the hostel ground in fine weather on Saturday afternoon. Army batted first and compiled 99, the top scorers being Boyle (19), Mathias (13), and Overton (11). Mallon was the most successful of the Gore bowlers with five wickets for 26 runs. Morgan took three for 24. Gore replied with 117, of which Jones compiled 30 and Morgan 23. PERSONAL.— Mr W. F. James, of Dunedin, who has conducted the totalizator at race meetings in Otago and Southland for many years, was elected an honorary life member of the Gore Racing Club at a meeting of the committee. Mr James recently retired from business. PERSONAL.— Mr R. Rusbridge, a son of Mr and Mrs T. F. Rusbridge, of Gore, has received advice to report at a North Island centre for service with the Fleet Air Arm. Mr W. J. Blackler, clerk of the Court at Westport, and formerly of Gore, has been transferred to Dunedin. He will leave Westport on October 22 to take up his new duties.
