PATRIOTIC TAX URGED
FAILURE OF DIRECT GIVING CLAIMED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, October 17. A resolution from Taranaki county patriotic committees favouring the raising of patriotic funds by taxation was supported at a meeting of the Taranaki Provincial Patriotic Committee at Stratford. Only one member voted against the motion. Mr S. Vickers moved the following resolution: “That the council delegates to the November conference urge that funds required by the National Patriotic Board and provincial patriotic councils be raised by taxation and that the existing patriotic organization be retained and given control of the moneys collected. Mr Vickers said he considered it was necessary for taxation to be substituted for direct giving, which had failed. As money had to be raised, taxation was the best means. Collectors had to depend on the same givers throughout their districts, and some people thought that if they had given 2/6 or 5/- they had given enough. Others invested in National Savings Bonds, but that was not giving, as they would get returns for their investments. There were places in Taranaki, said Mr Vickers, where they had a system of levies, and they had done well in getting their quota.
