FULL SCALE ATTACK
NEW DRIVE ON STALINGRAD (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 16. The first reports are now coming in of the great new German offensive at Stalingrad. It has met with initial success in some sectors. The Germans captured some streets in the factory workers’ section in the northwest suburbs of the city. The attack on the city began with nonstop raids by the German Air Force. The German planes came in in groups of 30 to 100, dropping their bombs on the defenders. The city was also heavily shelled by the German artillery and then the tanks and infantry rolled forward. The Soviet Army newspaper, Red Star, says that the defenders of Stalingrad have beaten back hundreds of German attacks and have destroyed 100 German tanks. It declares that the city must be held at all costs. The German High Command, in announcing that the offensive against Stalingrad has been resumed, says that the city will be captured in one terrific push. Marshal Timoshenko’s relief forces, which are in sight of the city, are reported to have made further progress.
