CONTROL OF MEDICAL ADVERTISEMENTS

Second Reading Of Bill (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 16. The second reading of the Medical Advertisements Bill was moved in the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer. The measure was needed, he said. It would control the advertising of medicines where advertisers claims could not be substantiated, but it would not restrict the sale of such remedies. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr 8. G. Holland, said the Bill was worth while. In common fairness they should not condemn those concerned without giving them an opportunity to defend themselves. Mi- T. H. McCombs (Lab., Lyttelton) gave examples of the advertising of cures which he described as vicious. He instanced cases where preparations costing a few pence were sold for considerable sums. Mr H. S. S. Kyle (Ind., Riccarton), said the Bill had been wanted for some time. More safeguards had been required for stock remedies than for preparations for human beings. • Mr W. S. Goosman (Nat., Waikato) also supported the Bill. He said he wondered if it went far enough. Mr J. A. Lee (Dem. Lab., Grey Lynn), said he was whole-heartedly in support of the Bill, which was read a second time.
