Mr H. G. McAlister, of Invercargill, a member of the staff of John Chambers and Son Ltd., has been appointed to the full-time position of adjutant-quarter-master of the Invercargill battalion of the Home Guard with the rank of second lieutenant. He will be attached to the New Zealand Temporary Staff. Colonel F. W. Furkert, formerly en-gineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, who has been Director of Defence Works at Fiji for the last 15 months, has returned to New Zealand. Messrs E. Sinclair, L. McNeil and H. Whyte (Invercargill), A. McDowall (Wrights Bush district) and J. A. Mitchell (Gore district) were appointed Southland representatives on the OtagoSouthland Provincial Association of Registered Poultry Keepers at a meeting in Invercargill yesterday. Mr J. W. Reed, a member of the mechanical staff of The Southland Times, who leaves shortly to take up military duties, was met last night by fellow members of the staff. Mr G. J. Hope, night foreman, made a presentation and Messrs J. L. McCormcik and A. Petrie also spoke. Cabled advice has been received by Mrs M. W. Egerton, Gorge Road, from her husband, Sergeant M. W. Egerton, R.A.F., that he is safe and well and on 21 days’ leave after taking part in 31 bombing raids over enemy territory.
