OBITUARY
MR JAMES RITCHIE Tlie death of Mr James Ritchie, a wellknown resident of Eastern Southland, occurred at his residence, Broughton street, Gore, last week. Born at Heriot 66 years ago, Mr Ritchie was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs Alexander Ritchie. He received his education at the Heriot school, and later he was engaged in farming operations about the district. Thirty-three years ago he took over a farm property at Arthurton and he worked this successfully until ill-health forced him to seek lighter work. He then took over a small holding in George street, Gore, but after a period he had to retire. Mr Ritchie
was a supporter of the Presbyterian Church, being a member of the Deacons’ Court at Gore for three years. He was also a member of the Gore Highland Society. He married Miss Jessie Cameron, of Arthurton, by whom he is survived. MR J. W. SHUTTLEWORTH Last week the death occurred at Gore of Mr John William Shuttleworth, who was well known in the Lintley and Balfour districts. Born at Halton, Lancashire, England, in 1867 Mr Shuttleworth was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph Shuttleworth. When he was 12 years of age his parents decided to come to New Zealand and the family landed at WeUington in 1879. After about three years at Christchurch the family came south to Balfour, where Mr Shuttleworth,
sen., secured a holding at Lintley. Mr Shuttleworth worked on various farms in the Waimea Plains area and later he and his brother took over the Lintley farm from their father. About nine years ago he was compelled to retire to Gore through illhealth. He is survived by his wife.
