£500 FOR PRISONERS OF WAR FUND
Street Day Yesterday A sum of about £5OO was raised as a result of the street day appeal in the city yesterday for the prisoners-of-war fund. The effort was organized by the Invercari gill U.S.A, with the help of the Invercargill Traders’ Patriotic Assistance Committee. Mr D. W. Stalker, chairman of the Traders’ Committee, said he thought the result was remarkably good considering that the appeal was made on a Wednesday when there were not nearly so many country people in the city as there usually were on a Friday. The coaxing of money from the pockets of the public yesterday was achieved by means of* sudden death raffles, auctions, the straight-out sale of goods in four shops that had been taken for the purpose, the sale of tin hat emblems and patriotic transfers and by collections. Apart from the raffles and auctions business was also brisk at the four shops. These were conducted by the Y.M.C.A., the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England and the Salvation Army, all of which are expending agents of the Patriotic Fund. Each shop took between £2O and £25 during the day. Two men dressed as clowns did a good stroke of business during the day as collectors by going round the streets with a model of an aeroplane in which one of them sat. Their amusing antics entertained the crowd and helped to maintain a steady flow of small coins. When business ceased for the day, Mr P. L. Hodge, chairman of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, in a brief speech said he wished to thank the public for its support. He also wished to thank the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for the large quantity of goods they had sent in for sale and auction.
