OLD BLUFF RESIDENCE DESTROYED
An old Bluff landmark disappeared yesterday morning when a seven-roomed house on Marine Parade owned by Mrs T. Gilroy, sen., and occupied by Mr W. P. Whaitiri was totally destroyed by a fire, the cause of which is unknown. The house was originally built for Bluff's first magistrate, Mr Watt, with timber brought out from England. It was purchased from him by the late Captain Paddy Gilroy, who was captain of the ship Chance, which is mentioned in Frank Bullen’s book, "The Cruise of the Cachalot,”
