Public Opinion

SUBSCRIBER—Your query was referred to a land agent who said that when a house was occupied by a tenant the owner had no right to take flowers and plants from the garden.

Sir,—l wish to place before you the position in which Home Guardsmen are now finding themselves with regard to their cycle tyres. Since the Home Guard was started members have given freely of their time and materials to keep it going and also to educate its new members. But now with the tyre question getting more serious from week to week, is it fair for members to be told to parade “with bicycles” each Sunday? It is not the cost of the tyre which is worrying members, but the fact that they have absolutely no chance in nine cases out of 10 of getting a new tyre. Now I ask, sir, has the position not reached the stage where Home Guardsmen are justly entitled to ask why motor transport is not being placed at their disposal. If it is possible to get aeroplanes down here for a patriotic display surely the Home Guard, which is doing work of firstclass importance, should be able to get trucks and petrol on Sundays. So far it seems that this matter has not greatly worried the heads, so I see no reason why members should continue to be made the chopping block. BLOW-OUT.
