WYNDHAM RACING CLUB

STAKES INCREASED BY £3lO When the programme for the Wyndham Racing Club’s annual meeting on New Year's Day is distributed in conjunction with that of the Southland Racing Club, owners and trainers will find a handsomely endowed two-day programme of galloping and trotting events in which to race their horses. An announcement has already been made about the increase in stakes to be given by the Southland Racing Club, and a similar policy has now been adopted by the Wyndham Racing Club, which has increased the stakes from £1550 to £lB6O. Although the stake money in each race has been increased, the principal additions are to the Wyndham Cup, which has been increased from £5OO to £6OO, and the President's Handicap, the chief sprint event of the day, which has been increased from £2OO to £260. It is understood that an adequate train service, suitable for all parts of Southland, is being arranged, and in order to fit in with this the first race will be run at 11.45 a.m. and the last race at 4.35 p.m. Dark Colleen Showing some of the dash which marked her early racing last season, Dark Colleen went close to bringing off a surprise win in the Kaikorai Handicap on Saturday. She was well placed from the start, and after shaking off Pianist just failed to stall off a strong rim by Milton Abbas. On that performance Dark Colleen may be worth following. Bashful Lady It is reported that 1500gns was the price put on Bashful Lady when a northern buyer made an Inquiry about the Winter Cup winner. Dunedin Guineas Sectional times in the Dunedin Guineas, taken by The Evening Star. Dunedin, were 26 2-ssec for two furlongs, 49 4-ssec for the half-mile and 63 2-ssec for five furlongs. Aravane The plans to put Aravane back into work did not materialize. The Weathervane mare has been retired from racing and has been mated with Royal Chief. Desert Maid It is probable that Desert Maid will be recommended for the schooling list. Overpaid Honesty was in the ascendant at Wingatui on Saturday. A South Canterbury investor was overpaid by £42 on a dividend and just as the payout clerk was mourning his loss the investor returned and made restitution. To Ride The Raker W. F. Ellis has been engaged to ride The Raker at Washdyke on Saturday. Other mounts for Ellis include King Herod, Kernel and Sigrid. Fidelis Fidelis had been working very well before the Dunedin meeting and hopes of his running a good race in the Ranfurly Handicap were entertained by his connections. He finished in seventh place just behind Taxpayer. The going was easy on Saturday, but it was not heavy enough to make the chances of Fidelis reasonably good. Taxpayer Taxpayer ran a good race for more than a mile in the Ranfurly Handicap on Saturday. He is in at Gore next week and may show an improvement. Auctor Auctor had every chance on Saturday, but failed at the business end of the Wakari Hurdles and was a moderate fourth. He did not show the dash which marked his racing at the Otago Hunt meeting. Mounts At Washdyke K. E. Wilson, the Invercargill apprentice, has been engaged to ride the following horses at Washdyke on Saturday:—Beau Ciel, Gunga Din, Silver Mask, Pioneer and Prince Shad. Norse Norse ran a fairly creditable third in the hurdles at Wingatui, and success in this department of the game may come his way soon. He might have put up a better performance on Saturday but for hitting hard the hurdle near the six furlongs post. He knocked a panel out. Royal Lancer and Atreus Royal Lancer had the Ranfurly Handicap in safe keeping a long way from home, but might have been lucky to steal a march on Atreus as they approached the home turn, comments a Dunedin writer. The latter was going particularly well at that stage, but met with interference which cost him several lengths. He finished very strongly after he got balanced again, and was only a short length behind Royal Lancer at the finish. On returning to the enclosure Atreus showed signs of having been galloped on in the race. Strip Strip, winner of the hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday is a son of Valkyrian, an English horse by William the Third by St. Simon. His performances across the flat have been more than useful for a galloper reported to have been a "bleeder,” but who it is now hoped has overcome this disability, writes Sir Modred. Strip’s dam, Dismantle, was by Tractor from Take Down, by Downshire from Decoy, by Medallion from Siren, by St. George from Watersprite, by Traducer from a mare of the great Mermaid family. New Zealand Strains In Sydney Close up New Zealand maternal blood strains figured successfully in the winners of the A.J.C. Derby and Epsom Handicap on Saturday. The Derby winner, Main Topic, is by Talking, whose dam, Society, was a New Zealand mare, and Freckles, winner of the Epsom Handicap, was from Suntint, a matron of Dominion strains. Katanga, who accounted for the weight-for-age event, the Colin Stephen Stakes, also descends from the greatest of New Zealand sire lines. He is a son of The Buzzard, by Spion Kop, by Spearmint, by Carbine, by Musket, says Sir Modred. ■ SOUTH CANTERBURY ACCEPTANCES (P.A.) TIMARU, October 13.
