MENACE TO TYRES
Broken Glass On Roads “In these days when tyres are so precious I would like to draw attention to the amount of glass to be found on the roads,” said Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Mackenzie at the meeting of the general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland) last night. Lieutenant-Colonel Mackenzie said that some daj's ago a crate of bottles had dropped off a lorry on the North road and there was still glass lying about. It had been swept into the gutter, but children had kicked it back on to the roadway. Mr F. E. R. Booth said that the glass of a broken beer bottle had been lying at the hcorner of Dee and Esk streets for four days. “It is sabotage to leave broken bottles on the roads these days. People who break bottles on a road should see that the glass is picked up,” Mr Booth added. The president, Mr S. C. K. Smith, said he did not know what the association could do about it except to call public attention to it. Mr F. G. O’Beime suggested that the corporation might be asked to sweep the streets more frequently, and another member suggested that the police might be asked to take action. Mr Booth: If anyone has an accident, and I suppose the dropping of a bottle of beer is always an accident, that person should see that the glass is removed from the roadway. Mr H. E. Russell: I suppose the dropping of a bottle of whisky would be a tragedy.
