Mr G. Stevenson, of Dacre, president of the Southland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, left by the express yesterday afternoon, for Christchurch to attend a meeting of the Linen Flax Advisory Committee. Mr J. H. Reed was elected president of the Invercargill Wool Brokers’ Association at the annual meeting. Mr M. W. Grantham left for Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Messrs W. T. Pocknail, railways transpost officer at Invercargill, and J. S. H. Orr, wagon supply officer, left yesterday for Dunedin, on departmental business. Mr E. E. Earnshaw, postmaster at Wyndham, began seven days’ annual leave yesterday and during his absence Mr D. Hunter will be acting postmaster. Pilot Officer L. J. Small, R.N.Z.A.F., son of Mrs A. Small, George stredt, has been promoted to the rank of flying officer. He is a flying instructor at a southern New Zealand air station. Pastor Marsden and Mrs Marsden, Mrs H. Schroeder and the Rev. H. R. Turner have left for Christchurch to attend the Baptist Union Assembly. Mr Charles Campbell, who has recovered from a recent illness, was present at last night’s meeting of the general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland) and was cordially welcomed back by the president, Mr S. C. K. Smith. During the absence of Mr A. J. Brown because of illness, Mr G. L. Gill is acting as postmaster at Nightcaps. Advice has now been received that Sub-Lieutenant Andrew Raines, a son of Mr and Mrs S. V. Raines, of Dunedin and formerly of Invercargill, was at the time of his death in an aircraft accident, a fighter pilot on an aircraft carrier. He was buried with full naval honours in a naval cemetery near Portsmouth. Mr A. Ryland, senior technician of radio station 4YZ Invercargill since the station was opened four years ago, has been transferred to Wellington. Yesterday afternoon he was bidden farewell by the staff. Mr H. C. Trim, station manager, handed him a gift from the staff and wished him success in his new duties. Mr Ryland will leave for Wellington tomorrow. Mr A. E. Foster, formerly engineer at 4ZB Dunedin, who will succeed Mr Ryland, has arrived in Invercargill. The general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland) at its meeting last night passed a motion of sympathy with the relations of the late Mr W. T. Guild, senior vice-president of the North Island Motor Union.
