GYMNASTIC CLASSES OF Y.M.C.A.
During last month membership of the Y.M.C.A. gym classes in Invercargill reached a record figure since the institution was reinaugurated two and a half years ago. The total is now 428 and this is considered most satisfactory, particularly as 70 members are now in the armed forces. ~,r „ * T The first season of the Y.M.C.A. Indoor Basketball League’s competition comprised 12 teams and 65 Keen players and this is a splendid augury of what lies ahead for mens basketball in the city. The Badminton Club is meeting every Saturday night and is proving very popular. The sound projector has been used regularly for the boys’ clubs ana ten films were shown. These included “London,” “Wings Over New Zealand, a boxing film, swimming, travel films and cartoons. The Rev. A. Kemohan and the Rev. R. H. Turner continue with the religious work among the boys groups and are pleased with the attention and keenness of the members. The war work of the institution for soldiers on leave is steadily. increasing and the Ladies’ Auxiliary isdoing a tremendous amount of work. They nave serviced the buffets of the various camps, cooked and served Saturday morning breakfasts and assisted with breakfast on other mornings. -At the institution during the last montn 123 beds were occupied by soldiers and Loa men off the Saturday leave trains were served with breakfast. Entertainments staged at the various camps during the month were 20 talkie programmes six concerts, three educational talks, four card socials and dance evenings, choir competition and sing songs and billiards tournaments.
