NATIONAL SAVINGS
CITY’S RECORD MAINTAINED After what the National Savings organizer, Mr W. G. Nield, described as “a very severe struggle” Invercargill on Saturday reached its National Savings quota of £2Q43 for the 47th successive week. Friday* was a poor day for national savings, only £llO being received in the city, and the result was that £933 was required on Saturday morning to reach the quota. Mr Nield had a busy morning making contacts by telephone and it was just at noon that a substantial subscription saved the situation. Every effort is to be made during the next five weeks to maintain the city’s National Savings record so that the city may claim a run of unbroken success for a full year. It is recognized, however, that these final weeks may prove the most difficult of all since they will coincide with the second Liberty Loan campaign which begins today and contines until November 14. The Southland objective for the loan is £350,000. If this sum is to be raised and the city’s National Savings record maintained a special effort will be needed. Mr Nield said he was confident that the patriotism of the people of Southland and their desire to do their full share in the war effort would be equal to the challenge. Referring to the Liberty Loan, Mr Nield said that although there would no doubt be a number of large investments the success of the loan would in the final analysis depend on the small investor. The raising of the loan was a community effort. A meeting of the Southland Second Liberty Loan . general committee will be held at the City Council chambers at 3 p.m. today.
