BOWLS
CITY CLUBS OPEN SEASON Although the rain which fell on Saturady afternoon delayed the start of play it was not sufficient to interfere seriously with the arrangements that five of the city bowling clubs, Southland, Northend, Georgetown, Invercargill and Te Rangi had made for the opening of the season. Neither did the rain seriously reduce attendances and there was a good muster of players at each green. , The opening ceremony at the Southland green was attended by the Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, Mr D. K. Torrance, representing the New Zealand Bowling Council and Mr N. McGorlick, representing the Southland Bowling Centre. The season was declared open by the president of the club, Mr W. J. Boyce, and Mrs H. Hay rolled the first bowl to score the proverbial toucher. When the rain ceased friendly games were played. The green was in fine order. There was a good attendance at the opening ceremony of the Northend Club. Because of the rain the ceremony was held in the pavilion. Mr A. Derbie represented the Southland Centre and Mr W. J. Thomas was present as representative of the City 7 Council. The season was declared open by the president of the club, Mr J. McMullan, and Mrs McMullan played the first bowl. At the Georgetown opening the Southland centre was represented by Mr L. Gray and the City Council by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr A. W. Jones and Mr W. Aitchison. Later the Mayor and Mr Torrance paid a visit to the green. The season was declared open by the club’s president, Mr R. G. Pullar, and Mrs Pullar played the first bowl. Rain delayed the start of play, but when it ceased the green was fully occupied. The players found the green in first class order. At the opening ceremony at the Invercargill Club Mr T. D. Pearce, president of the Southland presented the cup won by Invercargill last season in the four rink inter-club championship. The season was declared open by the club president, Mr A. Scott, and Mrs Scott played the first bowl. Later Mr and Mrs Scott entertained members and their friends to afternoon tea. There were about 60 players present and games were played when the weather permitted. The green was found to be playing exceptionally well for the first of the season. During the afternoon the Mayor and Mr Torrance visited the green. At Te Rangi the season was declared open by the president, Mr J. G. Holdsworth, and Mrs M. McKenzie, secretary of the Southland Ladies’ Bowling Centre, played the first bowl. The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor and Mr Torrance, and Mr A. Kynaston, who represented the Southland Centre, presented the cup for the Saturday inter-club competition won by Te Rangi last season. There was a good attendance of players.
