OBITUARY
SIR ALAN CURRIE (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 11. Sir Alan Currie, chairman of the Victoria Racing Club committee, died on Saturday. He won the Grand National Hurdles with Flash Jack and tlxe Newmarket Handicap with Mala. He also owned many other good winners. MR LESLIE IRWIN The death occurred recently of Mr Leslie Irwin, of Winton, who had been in delicate health for some years. Mr Irwin was well known and highly respected, having held several public positions, the chief of which was an eldership in the Winton Presbyterian Church. He was also treasurer and the present fine building stands as a monument to his untiring efforts in raising funds for the new church. He gave valuable service also as a Sunday school teacher. He was also treasurer to the Winton Athenaeum for many years and secretary to the Bee-keepers’ Association. When the Labour Government introduced the guaranteed price for butter he spared no effort to secure a guaranteed price for honey. He took a prominent part in politics and represented the local branch of the 1 Labour Party at the conference in Wellington in 1940. Mr Irwin was a native of Ireland, but came to New Zealand at the age of five with his parents to settle at Green Island, later moving to Wyndham. In 1910 he married Miss Beatrice A. Steadman, of Waikaia, and a few years later set up in business on his own account at Waianiwa. Going to Winton in 1926 he entered into partnership with Mr L. Grimwood and formed the business then known as Irwin and Grimwood. A few years ago he retired and went in for bee-keeping, but gave it up because of indifferent health. He is survived by his widow.
