U.S. AIRMEN’S SUCCESS

(Rec. 9.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. Major-General Russell Maxwell, commander of the American Forces in the Middle East, reported to the War Department that the American Air Forces based in Egypt had destroyed or badly damaged 37 Axis warships and other vessels in the Mediterranean since June. They had dropped 3,161,0001 b of bombs in 110 days and had shot down six enemy planes, probably shot down seven and damaged eight, apart from a very considerable number on the ground. The Americans had lost five heavy bombers, six medium bombers and eight fighters.
