PATRIOTIC FUND TOTAL

Praise For Southland’s Effort “I think it was a wonderful effort,” said Mr P. L. Hodge, chairman of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, at a meeting of the committee last night when reporting that a sum of £57,852 had been raised in Southland for the patriotic fund during the year ended September 30. Mr Hodge said that this was £3148 short of the province’s quota of £61,000, but it had to be remembered that if Southland had not been called on for an extra £ll,OOO for the prisoners-of-war fund, the quota would have been exceeded by £BOOO. During the intensive drive to reach the quota towards the end of the year, the people of Southland had raised money at the rate of £lOOO a day, and he thought that was a wonderful effort. Mr Hodge moved a motion thanking the people of Southland for their support of the patriotic fund during the financial year just ended. Mr J. N. Armour seconded the motion, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Hodge said that the provincial quotas for the current financial year would be fixed at a conference to be held in November at Wellington. It was decided that ways and means of obtaining money for the patriotic fund during the current year should be discussed at the next meeting of the committee. It was pointed out that during the year the patriotic fund might be faced with increasing demands and decreasing sources of revenue. It was agreed to invite the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church and the Joint Council of the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John, all expending agents of the patriotic fund, to appoint representatives to the committee. The Salvation Army and the Y.M.C.A., it was stated, already had representatives on the committee.
